The Theater Project will present a reading of Embedded, a one-act play by Mary Jane Walsh with seven characters set in a common war zone—a home. The enemy is the universal, raging alcoholic father. The children are the feisty foot soldiers who face reality and meet the enemy head on. The mother thinks she has the strength to diffuse the father’s frightening assaults and cannonades. She uses her children as shields to protect herself. Is it abuse to put them in the line of fire? Mary Jane Walsh is a playwright and actor. She wrote and performed her one-woman play, “Finishing It Off!,” which premiered in Richmond, Virginia. It was translated into Spanish as a two-hander entitled “Luces in Espejo” for its international premier in Montevideo, Uruguay. It was also performed in Spanish at the International Festival of Hispanic Theater in Washington, D.C. Jersey Voices at the Chatham Playhouse twice produced her 10-minute play, “Ping,” which she produced and performed at the Short Play Lab, Times Square Arts Center in New York City. The La Strada EnsembleTheater in Asbury Park also produced Ping. The Theater Project produced her plays “My Sister’s Back is Killing Me,” “A Can of Worms,” and “Gone to the Gulag” at the Burgdorff Center in Maplewood. Ms. Walsh is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and the Theater Project.  The Theater Project, headquartered at the Burgdorff Cultural Center in Maplewood, is an acclaimed professional theater group and the winner of two New Jersey Tony Awards. Following the play reading, the audience will have the opportunity to discuss the play with Ms. Walsh. Admission is free and all are welcome. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Cranford Public Library.
