Raphael’s Life House, founded by Cranford resident Edith Coogan and former resident, Mary Orrico, is Covenant House New Jersey’s Mother Child program, created to provide non-sectarian housing to homeless and pregnant young women and their babies when born, for up to one year. The goal is to assist the women in establishing an independent living situation for themselves and their babies. The women in the program are ages 18-23, alcohol and drug free, mentally and physically capable of caring for themselves and their baby, and willing to obey the house rules while either working or attending school. Raphael’s Life House shelters 12 women at a time; each mother shares quarters with her baby in a safe and homey environment.
Staff and talented volunteers provide classes to assist moms with prenatal care, parenting skills, building esteem, job seeking, educational and vocational opportunities and other critical life skills. Volunteers also participate as baby-sitters, host community monthly dinners, coordinate baby showers and fundraising events, and much more. Founded in 1993, Raphael’s has provided transitional housing and support for over 700 young mothers and their babies. Learn more at www.raphaelslifehouse.org.
