The Friends of the Cranford Public Library invite you to this lecture by Dr. Helen Brudner, Associate Director, School of Political and International Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Brudner will trace the trials and triumphs of women who have served and are serving in the United States armed forces. With an emphasis on World War II and current times, Dr. Brudner will talk about how women in the American military were perceived and how they perceived themselves, while pointing out the roles they played and continue to play. Oral history materials will highlight the lecture. The program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Admission is free and all are welcome.

The Union Chinese School is a non-profit organization that serves to educate and promote the awareness of Chinese language and culture. The school will host an Open House on Saturday, May 4th and May 11th, 2013 at Thomas Alva Edison Intermediate School, 800 Rahway Avenue, Westfield, NJ, 9:30 - 11:30 am. The Union Chinese School offers courses in Mandarin and traditional arts such as calligraphy and dance. Registration fee waived if students register during these dates. The Westfield Area Y in conjunction with the Westfield Y’s Men’s Club is pleased to host the 9th Annual Golf Outing and Dinner with Live Auction on Monday, May 6th at Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield. Last year, the event was a huge success and netted $64,000 for the Westfield Area Y’s Strong Kids Campaign.Registration and use of the practice range will begin at 10:15 am. Participants will enjoy lunch from 11:45 am- 12:45 pm and the Shotgun Start is at 1:00 pm. Play format is a shamble. Prizes will be awarded for both team performance and individual games of skill by both men and women. The cocktail hour begins at 6:15pm, followed by a buffet dinner and live auction hosted by John Elliott, WCBS TV Weathercaster.

"The Boys of Summer" is a fast-paced, one hour slide show, lecture and audio program presented by Dr. James P. Kane. Live again the story of the Brooklyn Dodgers and their love affair with their lively fans. See Ebbets Field. Hear again the magical voice of Red Barber, and see them all: Pee Wee, Jackie, Gil, Campy, and the Duke. Recall their sparkling 1955 World Series victory; but then hear the sad story of what happened to them all when the lights dimmed in Brooklyn and the cheering stopped. Admission is free and all are welcome. Sponsored by the Friends of the Cranford Public Library.

This filmed version of the 1927 George Gershwin Broadway musical Funny Face utilizes the play's original star, Fred Astaire, and several of the original tunes. Astaire is cast as as fashion photographer Dick Avery who is sent out by his female boss Maggie Prescott (Kay Thompson) to find a "new face". It doesn't take Dick long to discover Jo (Audrey Hepburn, who does her own singing), an owlish Greenwich Village bookstore clerk. Acting as Pygmalion to Jo's Galatea, Dick whisks the wide-eyed girl off to Paris and transforms her into the fashion world's hottest model.--All Movie
