Out of the Past is so perfect a film noir that it is considered practically a textbook example of the genre. In his first starring role, Robert Mitchum plays Jeff Bailey, the friendly but secretive proprietor of a mountain-village gas station. As Jeff's worshipful deaf-mute attendant looks on in curious fascination, an unsavory character named Joe pulls up to the station, obviously looking for the owner. Jeff is all too aware of Joe's identity; he's been dreading this moment for quite some time, knowing full well that it will mean the end of his semi-idyllic existence.—All Rovi

The Friends of the Cranford Public Library are pleased to present a staged, script-in-hand reading of "Inventing the Wheel," a new play by Joseph Vitale. In “Inventing the Wheel,” a middle-aged man waits for a woman whom he met on a dating Web site. She arrives, and after some wine, their small talk devolves into a cat-and-mouse game with decidedly disturbing implications. Just as they are about to call the whole thing off, they realize they have more in common than they might have thought. The play will be read by members of The Theater Project, an acclaimed, New Jersey-based professional theater group, and the recent winner of two New Jersey Tony Awards. The reading will be followed by a discussion among the author, director, actors, and members of the audience. Admission is free and all are welcome.
